The 22nd of October, 2019 marked the 111th year of the NMR since its completion. The tourists and the residents alike rejoice this occasion, sharing various memories and the heritage that this ‘Toy Train’ has been preserving. Being a part of the ‘Mountain Railways of India’ which is deemed by the UN as a heritage site, the stellar maintenance of its timelessness by the Southern Railways is commendable.
18th October, 2019 marked the day of joy for the people in the Nilgiris, because this was when the district government announced another milestone that the district has crossed in infrastructure – its own Government Medical College and hospital. The hospital is to be set near the empty lands of the old Film Factory, and can house around 300 beds inside. The locals are now relieved from the fact that they have to travel to Kovai or Mysuru for advanced medical services. The HC has sought out to the Civil Aviation Ministry regarding the Air ambulance, to handle emergencies in the hilly regions.
14th of October, 2019 – Various petitions from the local party in the Palani region were posted to the district collector, asking for archeological and exploratory studies to be conducted in the middle ranges of the Palani hills (Near Kodaikanal), as it’s being carried on at Keeladi. The people believe that the Kurinji (Mountain) region and its history has never been studied and that the dolmens that were discovered proved the existence of humans in the Palani hills, much beyond human’s history.
On the 25th of September 2019, the remains of a temple was found in the Adukkam and the Poombarai areas, as a cherry to the cake to the prehistoric dolmens discovered in this region some years ago. The government has announced that extensive studies to explore the remains of the temple, “Kuzhandhai Velappar Temple”. On one of the pillars, a Bas relief of a woman fighting a tiger was found.
